Lads and Lassies Highlander Festival
Monday, March 26, the choir department put on their concert for the Highlander Festival. This was one of five other performances for the Highlander Festival, which showcases the arts of HPISD.
The Highlander Festival started on Sunday, March 25, with HPHS’ One Act Play/Fine Arts Dance. Next was the choral music concert, followed by the Instrument Music Concert. The Highlander Festival ended with the District Art Show, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday – March 27 and March 28 respectively.
The concert featured the sixth grade choir, seventh and eighth grade guys choir, seventh and eighth grade girls choir as well as Park Version and Lads and Lassies. Though usually the choirs sing separately, in this concert the high school men joined the seventh and eighth grade choirs and the final song included all the choirs present.
The concert started with the sixth grade choir, which includes boys and girls. They sang Dors, Dors, Petit Bebe, The Captain’s Mate and What a Wonderful World. The seventh and eighth graders’ guys choir, joined by the HPHS’ men, sang their songs – What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor and Break it Down – next.
Park Version sang A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and Short People. The seventh and eighth grade girls choir sang their songs – Poi ch’el mio fuoco e spento, Heart, We Will Forget Him! and The Storm is Passing over – after Park Version.
The last choir group, the Lads and Lassies, sang Daemon Irrepit Callidus, Lux Aurumque and John the Revelator.
At the very end, all the choirs sang From Sea to Shining Sea together, giving the audience a beautiful ending fit for a beautiful concert.
All the separate groups sang very well. The sixth grade choir was very impressive given their age and years of experience when compared to the other groups. The seventh and eighth grade groups, both male and female, were also very impressive.
Park Version’s songs were great, and their rendition of Randy Newman’s Short People was really fun to watch and listen to. Daemon Irrepit Callidus from the Lads and Lassies was impressive and cool to listen to because of the contrasts within the voice parts.
The music concert for the Highland Festival was amazing and a pleasure to listen to. It could not have been done without all the choirs, and their directors, who helped to put the concert on.
