Trump Jr. has Secret Service protection removed

Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son, called to forgo his protection from the Secret Service on Monday Sept. 18. CNN News reported that earlier this June Trump requested for the Secret Service to remove protection on a family trip to Nassau, Bahamas. Although the request was accepted, the Secret Service strongly suggested that he restore protection, but Trump Jr. “demanded” that he would have no protection.

“I think that it is unwise because Trump [Jr]’s father, [President] Trump, is a very controversial person and that people might be looking to harm Trump [Jr.] and his family,” freshman Ross Tharp said.

This decision was made as the Secret Service was on the wire for budgeting and staff, due to Trump’s larger sized family. USA Today reported in August that more than 1,000 agents within the Secret Service had run funds (which were supposed to last the whole year) dry when they capped out their salaries and overtime allowances.

Along with this, the Secret Service is scrambling as a result of the yearly United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan. This event is massive enough to call in special agents from across the country. This meeting consists of heads of state and highly ranked American officials accumulated in one room. This is one of the most challenging times of each year for the Secret Service, as much more protection is required on top of the regular routine.

Kellyanne Conway, a counselor to Trump, has also decided to remove her Secret Service protection. This has no relation to Trump Jr.’s request. With both of these people removing their protection, the Secret Service has a little more breathing room. The Secret Service is required to protect all family members in the president’s immediate family unless requested otherwise. Although Trump Jr.  has removed his protection, it is still uncertain whether his immediate family’s protection will also be restrained. Trump’s other children will still be protected along with Trump Tower, which has been labeled as his initial residence.

Mike Cernovich, an author and social media personality blasted the New York Times on Sept 18th.

“Are you trying to get him murdered,” Cernovich said on Twitter.

Cernovich was referring to an earlier shooting during a baseball practice in June, resulting from a previous report by the New York Times. This shooting injured republican congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

“[The article] reestablishes the fact that he is losing protection to people who may want to hurt him,” Tharp said.

Trump [Jr]’s protection removal might be the break that the Secret Service needs at this point. Last month, the Secret Service reported that they would only have enough money to protect the president until September. If the Secret Service doesn’t find a plan or downsize, they could be in serious trouble.
