Inside HPHS Media

The girl with her own filing cabinet, junior Ava Marie Wall, is in charge of everything HPHS media for the yearbook staff. Through making sure every webstory gets uploaded and tweeting about them to get publicity for the stories, she has her hands full.

“Everyday when I walk in the classroom, I check my hanging file folder. If I have any web stories that Perkins has approved for HPHS media, they will be located there. Then, I check my Google Drive and look at my schedule that is updated daily by both Perkins and me, and upload any stories that are scheduled for that day,” Wall said.

Three months ago Ava was gifted her own filing cabinet, and she was ecstatic. “It was so exciting because it’s a place where I can keep all my folders and also keep organized,” Wall said.

She sits at the same computer every day in the back of the class and has her detailed calendar sitting next to her. She really needs to keep up with her calendar in order to not fall behind on deadlines. On the first of every month she creates a new calendar and makes multiple copies, in case something happens to the original. Wall also takes a picture so she has a digital copy, she can have at all times and has a Google spreadsheet she can access from home. When things go wrong, she color codes. Red is for when the webstory is not on the Google Drive but she has a printed copy. Blue is when everything is completed, posted and up to date. If it is not highlighted, that means it is scheduled to post in the next few weeks.

“As long as my work is up to date, I can literally do whatever I want and no one seems to care. Last year, when we were assigned positions on staff, HPHS Media was not a thing. I was actually signed as an Advanced Staffer, but at the end of that year, Perkins called me into her office. At first, I thought she was kicking me off the yearbook staff. I was terrified because I had a rough year as a staffer. Then, she asked me if I wanted to run this new thing called, HPHS media. I was really excited to be a part of something totally new. I have really enjoyed my job this year, even though in the beginning it was a rough transition settling into my new position because no one had been there before to model my role and help me through,” Wall said.

At the end of every six weeks she experiences a busier work load because of all the last minute web stories being turned in and grades being finaled that she has to track. And her calendar is double scheduled on posting dates so she really has to be on her A game. But she wouldn’t change it for the world and she is planning to continue her reign next year as HPHS media with her trusty side-kick, Morgan Schneider.
