A Day At The Fair

A Day At The Fair

The State Fair of Texas has been held in Dallas, Texas for the past 129 years and is still recognized as one of the most highly attended and best state fairs in America.  An estimated amount of three million people attended the State Fair this year – enough to fill the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T stadium 27 times.  The average family spends $200 – $300 per kid for a day at the fair filled with rides, food and fun.   Its exhibits cover 370,000 square feet and the food and rides revenue about $36 million over the course of one fair.

At the fair, there are different types of delicious and disgusting concoctions to try.  Some of the favorites are Fletcher’s corn dogs, funnel cakes and fried Oreo’s.

“I love the food at the fair,” freshman Ava Jahant said.  “My favorite is for sure the corn dogs and my second favorite would be the funnel cakes.  The first thing I think of at the fair is all of the food.  Nothing reminds me more of the fair than the corn dogs.”

Many people claim the fair games are “rigged” or are “impossible” but some people think differently.  “My favorite game at the fair is the water – shooting game because it’s the easiest and you get to compete with your friends,” freshman Caroline Keogh said.  “One of the games that seems impossible is the basketball game.  My friend really wanted a prize that they had and she knew I played basketball for school.  I ended up getting the ball in on my first try.  I’m convinced it was luck because the other three times I tried it, the ball bounced right off of the hoop.”

The fair has over 70 different rides including the iconic 212 – foot Texas Star Ferris wheel.  “My favorite ride at the fair is the Sky coaster,” Junior Amanda Hodak said.  “I did it with my friend Sarah Caffey, and it cost us 70 tickets.  So we had to save up to do it.  It’s 300 feet up in the air so you could see the entire fair when you got to the top.  It was really scary though because you had to pull the ripcord yourself.”
