These DIY felt coffee sleeves are great ways to make sure you don’t mix up your coffee with someone else’s.

You will need:

  • Printer paper
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Felt
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Paper coffee cup
  • Velcro (optional)
  • Sewing pins
  • Needle (optional)
  • Thread (optional)
  • Buttons (optional)

Measure the circumference of your paper coffee cup at the two points you want the coffee sleeve to lay. Since coffee to-go cups are tapered, you will need to cut an upside down trapezoid shape using the felt. Once you have cut the shape out, double check to make sure the sleeve fits properly on the cup before adding the Velcro to each side and securing it with hot glue. If you cannot find Velcro, you can secure it with just glue or you can secure it using buttons. To sew on the button you will need to make an “anchor point” on the fabric, which is essentially sewing an X-shape where you would like to place your button. Then starting with the top left corner pull the needle through to the bottom right corner. From there, move it to the bottom left corner and then to the top right corner. Remember to tie a knot to secure the sewing in place. Now measure the size of the button’s diameter and cut a hole on the other side of the sleeve.

Once you have a sleeve that properly fits the to-go coffee cups, you can then start adding personalization and customizing it to your liking. I made mine look like a fox. Starting out, I drew a free hand sketch of what I wanted the fox to look like on my printer paper. Then, when I was happy with the results, I traced it with sharpie and cut out the pattern. I pinned my pattern to the felt and cut it out. I then used the black sharpie to draw in details like eyes on the fox. To give the coffee sleeve a more polished look, I sewed a visible outline around the felt fox. I also outlined the top and bottom of the coffee sleeve with some brown thread. Once I was satisfied with the look of the fox, I hot glued it to the center of my sleeve.
