In my opinion, you are never too old to dress up for Halloween. Maybe you can grow out of trick-or-treating, but teenagers can enjoy other things on Halloween like Stranger Things viewing parties, or handing out candy to the kids on your block.

In order to spook your friends on Halloween, purchasing your outfit can be expensive. This is a guide on how to scare your friends and not your bank account.

  1. Utilize your friends’ and family’s closets. This is an obvious way to save money because if you dig a little deeper in anyone’s closet, you will definitely find a few items that are usable in a costume without having to be bought.
  2. Dress as a celebrity. Some might wonder how dressing like a celebrity can save you money, but celebrities are regular people who wear regular clothes. Dressing up like a celebrity can mean pairing your clothes in ways you would not normally, but nevertheless you are using your own clothes and not buying a “costume.” You also might have a concert shirt that you can wear, which is the easiest way to dress up.
  3. Amazon is your best friend. Shopping on Amazon is not only a cheaper way to find things like sunglasses or shirts, but it is also stress free and can be somewhat fun. Bonus points if you have Amazon Prime because they can get you free two day shipping for those procrastinators out there.
  4. If you are getting something more pricy, get something you can wear again. If there is an Urban Outfitters shirt or Free People pants that are just perfect for your costume, make sure it is something you can either wear for another costume, or just wear regularly. Try not to splurge on something you won’t wear again. This can also be a fun way to work something different into your closet.
  5. Go to a thrift store. Thrifting is a fun and easy way to save money on things that work for your outfit, but that you would not normally buy. My favorite thrift store in Dallas is Thrift Giant. It is huge and has tons of fun things from bowling shoes to band shirts. This can take a little time and patience, but it is fun and so satisfying when you find what you need. One thing that is important to note is thrift stores don’t have everything, so it is easier to browse your options instead of searching for something specific.
