Valentine’s Day comes around once a year. It’s a holiday that celebrates the love between couples around the world. Thou people do question if the holiday is necessary when there are anniversaries, which serve as a type of celebration day for couples, and other days within a year to celebrate a relationship or person. Valentine’s Day is unnecessary because it is a waste of money and time for couples and is a sad holiday for people who are single, due to the fact that they are just simply reminded that they have no one to date.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday that turned into a status more than a meaningful holiday. It is another commercialized holiday, as it is just another excuse to go buy chocolates, flowers, jewelry, and other gifts for your partener. Couples compete against each other to see how much they spend on their partners. In 2015, 18.9 billion dollars were spent on Valentine’s Day gifts. Couples spent 52.2 million on flowers, 50 million on jewelry,  38.3 million on apparel, 7.2 million on movies, 7.1 million on restaurants, 1.2 million on spas,  and 18.6 million on other various gifts. That is a substantial amount of money for just one day.

Valentine’s Day might be a happy holiday for couples, but the fact that it is a holiday of love between two people, doesn’t make someone who is single feel any better about themselves for not having a partner. Single individuals go out and watch couples try to swallow each other’s throats and exchange cheesy gifts. While they go back home and watch romantic movies crying about how lonely they are, and trying to imagine what having a partner would be like.

Valentine’s Day is a time waster, because you have to go and spend money on gifts and plan a elaborate day for your partner. In just 365 days there are a bunch of holidays that people already have to spend time and money on someone else. There is Christmas where you spend money on every person in your family, birthdays where you celebrate a special person and shower them in gifts all day long, and a several of other holidays. Not only would it be less costly, but if there was no Valentine’s Day, anniversaries would be more valuable because it is a special day once a year where you take your partner to do something nice and spend time with them. Why not save up all of your money and plan a vacation for your five year anniversary instead of spending tons of money to buy a girl an expensive box of chocolates she will eat in one day?

Altogether, Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is unnecessary because it sucks up time and money when there are other occasions to spend money and time on, yet still people continue to participate in this commercial holiday.
