Democrats take town hall
As we get closer to the Iowa Caucuses, Democrats took to a town hall meeting to answer the unanswered questions of many Americans. This meeting took place Jan. 25, and all three candidates answered questions from a wide range of Iowan people who attended this town hall meeting. Bernie Sanders started off the night and focused on his definition of “democratic socialism” that highlights an economic system he deems unfair. Many people have expressed concern over Sanders’ association with socialism, and he addressed this concern and focused on the wealth inequality due to big business men on Wall Street that have hold of a large sum of wealth.
Martin O’Malley followed, trying to gain ground with his currently low ratings. O’Malley stressed the importance of taking care of the environment with one of his plans to switch to electric energy by 2050. Although his support does not match that of his political rivals, O’Malley was articulate with his planned course of action in need of Iowan ears.
The front-runner, Hillary Clinton, capped off the night by answering questions concerning her honesty displayed to the American people in recent years. Questions focused on her leadership and referenced her experience politically. Allusions to Republican front-runner, Donald Trump, were made as a warning to Americans to avoid a demagogue that tells Americans that their country is in danger.
Both Hillary and Bernie acknowledged one another individually and showed their respect toward one another. This nuance of the Democratic discussions differs from that of the Republican’s where there seems to be a distaste for one another.
This important discussion of issues will establish many final decisions for Iowa voters and push one of these three candidates forward. Iowa serves as an important battle ground that is a must win to start their campaign on the right foot.
