Senioritis

As seniors enter their last semester of high school, many have trouble staying motivated.

Senioritis is a sensation almost all high school seniors have felt since the beginning of high school itself. The second semester of senior year is when it moves into full swing. Most students are already into college, and test scores and GPAs seem to quickly be losing their value. Seniors find it increasingly hard to stay focused and motivated to work hard.

Senior slacking can be seen in all sorts of forms, but one of the most popular is dropping from an AP to a regular class or just dropping the class all together.

“I had originally signed up for AP Psychology second semester, but I ended up switching out. As the year went on I got pretty worn out. All four of my core classes are AP, and then I found out I got into my top picks for college. It just didn’t seem necessary to put all that time and effort into one more AP class,” senior Katie Dalton said.

Something that students have to be wary of when switching down or out of a class is the luminous threat of a college retracting their admissions offer once they are notified the student has made a change to the original schedule. According to the school counselors, this rarely happens and as long as students notify the college and keep their grades up there shouldn’t be a problem. Usually though, no matter what class, seniors can finds themselves struggling to keep up their studying habits, grades and attendance.

“I really am battling with doing all my homework each night. There are so many distractions like senior dance plans and college preparations to keep me busy that I often put my homework off until the last minute, something I never use to do,” senior Landry Rays said.

Even though students often have tunnel vision on graduating high school, going to college and beginning the next chapter of their life, teachers are still focused on presenting and testing students on new material.

“As graduation gets closer and closer, my motivation has definitely decreased. Unfortunately, none of my teachers are really matching my attitude and letting up on our course work. I just keep telling myself I only have a couple more months to really work hard and I know it will go by quick,” senior Annie Dodd said.

There is no doubt senior slacking is prevalent among the senior class, just as it has been for many seniors across the country for years. Seniors just have to keep in mind they are in the final push and before they know it, it will all be over and they will be moving forward to college, jobs and the real world, so it is important to make the most of the little time they have left.
