Rowdy for Howdy

bc_sept23_HowdyDanceOn the night of September 4th, hundreds of students got hot and sweaty for the first dance of the year to celebrate the first game of the year. The students were energetic, and the gym was very hot and humid.

I, as a freshman, came in expecting something totally different from what I experienced.

“It was a lot more fun than I expected, and there were a ton of people. It was super crowded, and I think that was probably the most surprising to me,” freshman Kathryn Walton said.

“I expected howdy to be not as fun as it was, all the upperclassmen said ‘do this’ and ‘don’t do this,’ and it was kind of scary for me, but when we got there it was just a lot of fun getting to hang out with friends and dance,” freshman Caroline Keogh said.

A key part of any dance is the music.

“I thought the Howdy Dance was a blast,” sophomore Wells Weinberg said. “I would like to hear more “5 Seconds of Summer” but I thought the music was pretty good, because they played stuff that is usually on the radio, and is fun to dance to,” Weinberg said.

Which was true. The DJ played a ton of upbeat, fun, dance songs.

The dance started end of the football game. In which, sadly, the Scots did not secure a victory. Although many were upset with the loss, it seemed to hit the seniors the hardest. Most of the senior class decided not to go to the dance after the unsettling loss.

“It was kinda sad, because I knew this was my last howdy dance and sad because the football team had just lost. It was still so much fun because since were seniors we get to stand on the bleachers as a senior privilege,” senior Claire Green said.

Getting to wear athletic shorts and tee shirts to a dance? The wardrobe of the Howdy Dance was definitely one of my favorite parts. Being comfortable definitely made dancing easier.
“It was super cool to be able to wear shorts, because it was really hot in there and it made the vibes really chill,” sophomore Gracie Nunneley said.

“The gym was like a oven. At first I did know they had water and I didn’t know how I was going to make it through, but they thankfully did, and being able to sit down and drink some water definitely made the whole thing a little more enjoyable,” sophomore Gracie Nunneley said.
