Gua Sha, a tool used for pain relief and jaw shape, has blown up over Tik Tok this past month after various users shared their experience with the product.

Debra Wilson, Ph.D, wrote on her blog about what Gua Sha is and its effectiveness. Gua Sha is a East Asian medicine that treats muscle pain and tension, according to her website.

“Gua Sha is most often used to relieve muscle and joint pain,” Wilson wrote on her blog. “Conditions of the muscles and bones are known as musculoskeletal disorders. Some examples include back pain, tendon strain and carpal tunnel syndrome.”

Aside from a history of relevance throughout Asia, the U.S. recently heard of the tool in the early months of 2021.

Now gaining its recognition, Gua Sha has sold out more than 11 times at Credo Beauty, a beauty product store according to reporter Carly Milne at E! News headquarters.

Tik Tok has made the biggest impact on the use of Gua Sha over the last few weeks. There are currently 260.1 million videos under the Gua Sha hashtag.

On the app, users have shared before and after result, claiming it took as little as a week to see results. Some on Tik Tok have also shown techniques to help define the jaw and relieve tension in the jaw more effectively.

Freshman Ava Waskey is no stranger to the product and its benefits.

“I first used Gua sha three years ago when I got it for Christmas,” she said. “I liked that my face would not be as puffy in the morning after I would use it.”

You can find Gua Sha in local stores such as Sephora and Ulta Beauty, as well as online sites like Amazon.

The tool coasts anywhere from $10 to $30, depending on the tool’s quality.
