Brad’s Apps #1: Podcast Players

The best podcast app for iOS: Overcast

Overcast is a podcast player created by Marco Arment. It is a power-users’ dream compared to the bare bones functionality in the preinstalled Apple podcast app.

One of the features you will immediately notice is Overcast’s ability to search more than just iTunes for podcasts. This opens you up to a wide variety of sources where you can find programming that is not available in iTunes. Another feature I enjoy is the recommended-by-Twitter section. To use this feature you must sync your Overcast account with your Twitter account. This feature shows up when your adding a podcast and it will show you podcasts your friends like and ones that are trending.

Once you subscribe to all your podcasts, the part of the app you’ll be spending most of your time in is the player which has a beautiful minimalist design. There are many features(Some required a premium $4.99 purchase) which allow you to moderate the way you listen to your podcasts. The player features range from speed to sleep timers and sharing. I love how when sharing you can share from a certain time within the episode instead of just the episode. This is great for when your listening to a live podcast so your friends know how far back they should go. Another feature I enjoy is the voice boost which enhances the volume of the speakers and makes their voices clearer. This feature is great when your listening to a non-professional podcast when the hosts don’t have million dollar equipment. Speed controls are nice great when your listening to long overly drawn-out episodes, along with the smart speed feature which auto skips silent times. The best part about all of these features is that you can set them to happen on every episode, show or have it be a one time thing.

The app also has many features to handle episode management, download times, whether you want downloads over WiFi or cellular, how many episodes you want to keep on the device and more. This is an app I rely on each week to listen to podcasts and I recommend you give it a shot by clicking the download button below! (Sorry Android Guys, I’ll pick an Android app next week!!)
