FX’s Atlanta returns for second season March 1

Donald Glover’s award-winning show is back from hiatus

Atlanta, a television series on FX, will be returning for its second season on March 1, 2017. The show had a one-year hiatus during 2017 after its premiere in 2016. Two trailers have been released teasing the new season to the public. One features the fictitious upcoming rapper Paperboi and his usual crew in a sprawling nightclub, and the other one had Donald Glover’s character, Earn, cycling through various familiar Atlanta spots, such as a corner store and a street basketball court.

Atlanta’s Golden Globe and Emmy successes, consisting of a best actor in a comedy show and best comedy show for the Globes, and outstanding lead actor for the Emmys, launched Glover’s already recognized dream project into bigger opportunities. Glover has now signed a contract with FX to work on more projects to be broadcasted on the network, including a new Deadpool cartoon made by Donald and his brother Stephen Glover.

Each trailer included unique music. The first trailer featured “Too Fast” by Sonder, a dreamy R&B track. The second trailer featured “Gap in the Clouds” by UK indie-rocker Yellow Days, a sunlit love song with piercing vocals. Atlanta has built a reputation for using unique songs in its episodes and trailers. In 2016, when the promotional trailers for its first season were being released, most of them were dominated by Tame Impala tracks like “‘Cause I’m a Man” and “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.” Most viewers were surprised by the choice of sound in the trailers, as a show centered around Atlanta and hip-hop culture could be reasonably expected to have trap beats and classic breakdowns chugging it along instead of dreamy indie music. However, the show lacks none of the expected. 2 Chainz, Kodak Black, and other hip-hop artists can be heard in the soundtrack of the show, and the trio Migos even makes a guest appearance as a group of roughneck drug-dealers. Atlanta represents its city’s culture accurately through its safe hip-hop cuts, but also shows viewers its depth through ambient alternative tracks.
