Childish Gambino Takes Home 3 Awards

Emmys+2017

Donald Glover, or Childish Gambino, won three Awards at this past Emmys Awards: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Award, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writer for a Comedy Series. All of these nominations were for his show: “Atlanta.” Previously, the show had already received two Golden Globes for similar categories, and has won numerous other awards. Glover – who is a singer, songwriter, rapper, actor, writer, producer and director – created this music-themed show to tell the story of young rappers trying to make it. “Atlanta” has been very well received and is expected to return to FX in 2018.

As far as music goes, his old and new albums continue to live on.

“I’ve been listening to him for four or five years since ‘Sober’ came out,” Cole Jackson said.

“Sober” was Glover’s first song to be certified gold, selling over 500,000 copies. Since then, he has released a second album, which was heavily influenced by funk/R&B groups of the 1970’s, was certified gold a short six months after it was released. It featured songs like “Me and Your Mama” and “Redbone,” the latter being the most popular song on the album. It was an unusual release for his normally hip hop/rap songs, but his audience still received it well: “Redbone” reached number 12 on Billboard’s Top 100.

“I think it’s really cool that he can do both acting and singing and be really successful in both,” Jackson said.

While Glover may have hinted at his third album also being his last, he also revealed other upcoming music, like his long-awaited fourth collaboration with Chance the Rapper. He also confirmed this at the Emmys. Supporters are preparing themselves for Chance’s and Glover’s first collaboration since their release in 2013: “The Worst Guys.” The guitar solo, which hinted at his “genre departure” in “Awaken My Love!” was Gambino’s favorite part of creating the song. This new collaboration is rumored to be a mixtape, and Glover halted on confirming any rumors so that he could do the project right.

“It’ll be interesting because they are two of the biggest lyrical geniuses in rap music, so it should be good,” Jackson said.

Although his music career may be coming to a close, it is just the start for “Atlanta.” With MTV, Golden Globe and Emmy Awards, the show has over 700,000 viewers and is still gaining more. Glover is also working on other film projects, like being the voice of Simba in the remake of the “Lion King.” He will continue to act, write and produce, but he is not quite finished with music just yet. His third album and the Chance collaboration are to come out soon.

“Hopefully him and Chance will do a collaboration tour, and hopefully he will come to Dallas,” Jackson said.
