On Thursday, October 5th, 2017, it was game over for Harvey Weinstein. No matter the amount of movies that are now regarded as classics that he has produced over the past decades, such as Pulp Fiction, his career was obliterated that fateful Thursday. The decades-long allegations that had been squashed through settlements, had finally resurfaced, and brought down Weinstein like a bag of bricks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein founded his original company, Miramax, in 1979, with the very first allegation occurred just a year later, in 1980. Paula Wachowiak, who was a production assistant on the Weinstein-produced film The Burning, accused Weinstein of lewd conduct while she was signing checks for the film’s cast and crew. The most recent allegation took place in New York City in 2015, where an Italian model named Ambra Battilana Gutierrez accused Weinstein of groping. That allegation led to a sting operation by the New York Police Department, which involved having Gutierrez wear a wire. The wire was a success in getting Weinstein to admit that the groping occurred, yet the New York District Attorney’s Office declined to press charges.

Weinstein, who was always politically active, held many Democratic fundraisers, with the most recent one being a 2016 fundraiser for the then Democratic Nominee for the Presidency of the United States, Hillary Clinton. Politicians such as New York Governor Anthony Cuomo, Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, have donated any contributions they have received from Weinstein to charities, with the majority giving the contributions to charities that specialize in helping women’s causes. Republican politicians, such as Ted Cruz, states that it shows a hypocrisy on the part of the Democrats, which led to Democratic Party Executive Director Basil Smikle calling it “shameful that some have sought to use this matter to score political points, but the real issues are far too serious to allow any distraction to overtake them.”

Republicans have been critical of The Clinton Foundation as they say that the foundation is keeping the money given by Weinstein, which has been estimated to be between $100,001 to $250,000, as listed on the foundation’s website. However, according to The Washington Post, a spokesperson from the Clinton Foundation explained that the money had “been spent fighting childhood obesity and HIV/AIDS, combatting climate change, and empowering girls and women, and we have no plans to return them.” Hillary Clinton, in a statement, stated she was “shocked and appalled” regarding the accusations against Weinstein, and will follow the lead with the other politicians and donate Weinstein’s contributions to charity.

As expected, students at Highland Park High School hold very negative feelings about Harvey Weinstein. Student Caroline Gruver, when asked about Harvey Weinstein, said, “I think he is disgusting and reprehensible.” It is clear that Weinstein, and his actions, are highly inappropriate, yet have been the norm for quite some time. Now with all of the support people have given the victims, their is an incredibly strong chance that Weinstein’s ideologies about the workplace and women, may finally fall and crash into the ground. The only silver lining to that, is undoubtedly, that.
