Sherin Mathews of Richardson, Texas, was reported missing on October 7, according to the Richardson Police Department. She was last seen in the backyard of her family’s home early that morning by her adoptive father, Wesley Mathews.

It has been over a week since an amber alert was sent out to the state of Texas, it declared that a three year old child was missing. The girl, Sherin Mathews, was forced by her father to stand outside her house for not drinking her milk. Wesley Mathews, her father, claimed that she was put near a tree where coyotes reportedly roamed. When he went outside 15 minutes later and saw that she was nowhere to be found. She was last seen on Oct. 7 at around three in the morning in Richardson, Texas.

According to the Richardson Police, Wesley waited about five hours before he reported her missing. He claimed to have waited until it was light out before searching, and passed the time by doing laundry. The Mathews’ car, however, was reported to have been driven between four a.m. and five a.m. Police were not notified about Sherin’s absence until three a.m. He was sent to jail for abandonment and endangerment of a child, but was bailed out on Oct.15.

It’s incredibly sad and disturbing and I’m really frustrated that her dad [left her outside],” sophomore Bo Clarke said.

Sherin has developmental issues and small amounts of verbal communication. Adopted from an indian orphanage, Sherin was reported to have been abandoned from her home before she moved into the orphanage. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt, black pajama pants, and pink sandals. Police went door to door with search dogs, and even helicopters, to find the missing girl. There were no results.

As of Sunday, Oct. 22, a body of a small child was found during the search for Sherin under a small tunnel under a road. The body has not been identified yet, but Richardson police believe that it is indeed the body of Sherin Mathews, for they had no reason to believe the body of a different child had been found.

“I do believe the body is the little girl’s,” said Clarke, “…Who drinks milk at three in the morning, who leaves their child under a tree in the dark where coyotes are ‘known to roam’?”

People from other communities have been pouring into the Mathews’ neighborhood, and the memorial under the tree where Sherin Mathews stood is still growing.
