How to stay hydrated

Seven steps and tips to help you stay hydrated

This will be a guide of sorts to help you drink enough water throughout the day. Being dehydrated is very unhealthy as it can, in extreme cases, lead to things like heat injury, urinary or kidney problems, seizures, and low blood volume shock.

Some signs that you might be dehydrated are fatigue, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, and extreme thirst.

  1. Water is the best thing to drink. Although drinking things other than water are okay, if you are truly thirsty, water is the only thing that will quench your thirst.
  2. If you are hungry, eat fruit. Fruit is healthy and it is a way to get hydrated. Fruit has high levels of water in it, so eating fruit can help to hydrate you.
  3. Carry around a water bottle. This is not only a way to drink more water, but also it helps the environment and saves money. Carrying around a water bottle can help you to remember to be drinking water throughout the day.
  4. Drink water before, during, and after you work out. If you are planning on working out, sports drinks have vitamins and ingredients that can help you absorb water and have energy. Drink a sports drink before you workout and water during and after the workout in order to stay hydrated.
  5. Hunger and thirst can be confused. Often the feeling of thirst is mixed up with the feeling of hunger, this means sometimes when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty. A way to get around this is to drink a glass of water and wait a few minutes. True hunger is not fixed by drinking water.
  6. If you often forget to drink water, drink on a schedule. A good way to do this at school is to fill up your water bottle every other class period.  You should also drink a glass of water with every meal, which will spread out the water you drink.
  7. Do not try to drink a full day’s serving of water in one sitting. When you drink water to stay hydrated, it should be spread out throughout the day, not just in one sitting.
