According to the World Health Organization, less than 50 percent of the world’s population has access to essential medicine. The United Parcel Service (UPS), a delivery company, is working with a variety of organizations to lower this number in Rwanda, Africa.

A lack of hospitals and medical treatments has brought many pains to the citizens of Rwanda. Poor sanitation, sexually transmitted diseases, malnutrition and disease had plagued Rwanda for decades. As of 2004, it was estimated that there were fewer than two physicians and 21 nurses per 100,000 people.

UPS partnered up with “Zipline,” “Gazi, the Vaccination Alliance” and the Rwandan Government to help the people of Rwanda who were without access to essential medicine. Zipline is a drone delivery company that specializes in a national delivery system of essential medicine. Their drones have the ability to make 500 deliveries a day, rain or shine, 24/7 in 30 minutes or less. They can carry out deliveries in a 75 kilometer radius with a maximum capacity of 1.5 kilometers.

“As of October 13, 2016, the Rwandan government began using drones to deliver up to 150 emergency flights per day to 21 transfusing facilities in the western half of Rwanda,” the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation reported.

Gazi, the Vaccination Alliance has served the world for 17 years, improving access to vaccines for children living in the world’s poorest countries. Based in Switzerland, they’ve been fighting to increase the use and effectiveness of vaccines.

The effects of the delivery have saved the lives of many dying Rwandans.

“One of the most important focus areas for The UPS Foundation is to spark public-private partnerships that create powerful scale and drive demonstrable impact in support of global humanitarian aid and relief,”  Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation, said  during an interview with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. By donating 1.1 million dollars, UPS has heavily influenced a delivery system necessary for the Rwandans.
