Matt Lauer

Throughout the past two months there has been an unmistakable surge of harassment in the workplace being discovered and dealt with. First it began with Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., and now it has moved on to Matt Lauer.

Lauer, the famous host of NBC’s morning news show Today, has had multiple allegations of sexual harassment in the workplace be brought against him. These allegations span all the way from a decade ago to present day. As it has been the case with all of these cases that have emerged through the work of the women and journalists, the harassment began in the workplace. When people start out at news show like Today, they want to make a mark on it and climb up the corporate ladder. Lauer used that ambition to manipulate and harass those who dared to dream big in their professional field.

The firing of Lauer, who was perceived by many to be the forerunner of NBC’s morning news division with a large twenty-five million dollar annual salary, sent shockwaves through the morning news world. When executives at NBC were faced with the new batch of allegations against Lauer, they were forced to be quicker than they would have if the allegations had surfaced a few months ago due to the revelations of the allegations against other men in the industry. They were so quick that Lauer’s co-anchors on the Today show only learned of his firing two minutes before air, at which they announced his firing to their viewers.

Lauer’s personality and attitude during celebrity interviews left people with a premonition that he was potentially not the person that he claimed to be to his viewers. The most notorious example of his behavior during a celebrity interview was one with Anne Hathaway where he appeared to blame her for photos that were taken without her knowledge when she was getting out of an SUV for a film premiere in 2012.

Justifiably, widespread criticism against Lauer and support for his termination swiftly followed the announcement of his firing. Keith Olbermann, Hillary Clinton and Dennis Leary denounced Lauer and applauded his accusers for coming forward with their stories. Chris Green stated that once he heard Lauer was fired he was, “happy they figured it out,” in removing Lauer from his job at Today.
