Girls’ Soccer Looks to Repeat
Girls’ Soccer is gearing up for another season and kicking it into gear. They’re trying to repeat as State Champions after finishing last year as the number one team in the country. Many fans, like Blake Bowman and Maisie Jackman, can’t wait to see the team in action.
“Going to the games is fun because it’s fun to see people from your school going out and winning in a sport they love to play,” Senior Blake Bowman said.
Blake participated in the program as a “Soccer Boy” last year, meaning the girls chose him to sponsor the team. He showed up to many games and cheered the girls all the way to state. Additionally, Mr. Bowman loves the exciting games, especially when it goes to penalty kicks, like the semifinals of his freshman year. The girls’ first game to start the 2018 season is January 11 versus Benbrook in a tournament.
“I like watching people score goals,” Senior Maisie Jackman said.
Fortunately, she gets to see a lot of them because Senior Rebecca Wasserman and Sophomore Presley Echols lead a potent scoring attack for the Scots. Wasserman is committed to Penn State while Echols will head to the 40 Acres as a future member of the Longhorns. The Lady Scots are stocked with talent, such as Senior Sarah O’Neal who is going to play at Vanderbilt next year as well. Furthermore, the team had an All American and multiple All State selections. All of this led to an undefeated season; one that was to remember. When the Scots piled up after the final whistle in Georgetown, Texas last April, they had known they did something special.
“I’m looking forward to spending my last year with all these girls and going on out of town tournaments and hopefully winning state,” Sarah O’Neal said.
She added on by saying the goal this year, as every year, is to win state. Also, she’s playing even harder for the girls who aren’t going onto college careers because this is their last shot at competing in the game they love. Hard work and resolve are hallmarks of the program. Above all, grit and focus are necessary to make it through a whole season with an egg in the loss column.
“I think the girls are the best in the state, and we’ll show that again this year,” Mr. Bowman said.
Without needing to be said, the girls soccer team is in wholehearted agreement, and they’re determined to prove it- all season long.
