K-Cups
An Innovative DIY
Among the thousands of coffee fanatics around the world, the production of the Keurig was a godsend, allowing freshly brewed coffee, tea or various other hot drinks to be made within minutes. With the Keurig came the Keurig cups, sometimes called K-cups. The K-cup, which holds the various blends that make the flavourful coffee, is used by many brands such as Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Swiss Miss and more. However, once the cup has been used, many throw it into the trash without a second’s notice. Derived from pitterandglink, this Do-It-Yourself project will help prevent the waste of K-cups by creating hats with them that serve as decorations.
The materials needed are: used K-cups, spray paint (any color), decorations, scissors, a hot glue gun and an empty cereal box.
First, draw a circle onto the cereal box that is two centimeters wider in diameter than the bottom of the K-cup. Cut the circle out. This will serve as the base of the hat.
Then, spray paint the outer layer of the K-cup and one side of the cereal box circle in a color of choice. The paint may take up to an hour to dry, but the entirety of the craft is quite short.
After the paint has dried, hot glue the base onto the bottom of the K-cup. The cup should be placed in the middle of the circle so that there is an outer rim.
Finally, add decorations to the outside of the hat. This can include felt, ribbon, feathers, button or any other craft supplies. The design is entirely up to the one creating the hat.
The finished product can be placed anywhere, adding a little color to any room. In fact, in honor of the upcoming holidays, it can even be created into an ornament to adorn Christmas trees.
To decorate a tree, though, one extra modification must be made: before placing the base onto the K-cup, poke a hole through the top of the cup. As there should already be a second hole from the Keurig machine (if the K-cup is used), thread a piece of twine connecting the two holes and tie inside the cup. This will make a hooped string that can be hung onto the Christmas tree. To make it more festive, the hats can be shaped into reindeer, elf, Santa or snowman hats.
