Grammy gains
Nominations for the January award show are released
“I want to go to the Grammys one day,” Singer/songwriter Khalid Robinson said.
This aspiration to make it to the prestigious award show was tweeted in January 2014, and on November 28, 2017, he was nominated for five Grammys at 19 years old. He was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album (“American Teen”), Best Music Video (“1-800-273-8255”), Song of the Year (“1-800-273-8255”), and Best R&B Song (“Location”).
This year’s Grammys reflects an increasing awareness of occurring issues such as mental health. Logic’s “1-800-273-8255” tackles the topic of suicide prevention, evident in the title of the song, which is the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
“The moving song embodies a call to the suicide prevention network, where Logic and his collaborators enact a call in, its response and the result,” billboard.com writer Colin Stutz said.
The Record of the Year category includes: “Redbone” by Childish Gambino, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, “The Story Of O.J.” by Jay-Z, “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar, and “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars.
Another issue brought up in nominated music is that of blackface.
“The full [The Story Of O.J.] video arrived on Thursday, an unsettling four minutes of black-and-white animation, meant to mimic blackface characters and other racist imagery of vintage Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons, among other studios guilty of using those representations,” usatoday writer Maeve McDermott said.
The Album of the Year category includes: “‘Awaken, My Love!’” by Childish Gambino, “4:44” by Jay-Z, “DAMN.” by Kendrick Lamar, “Melodrama” by Lorde, and “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars. This year’s Album of the Year nominees made history.
“For the first time since 1999, not a single white male artist or group was nominated for the 60th annual Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year category,” Huffington Post writer Jenna Amatulli said.
The Song of the Year category includes: “Despacito,” “4:44,” “Issues” by Julia Michaels, “1-800-273-8255” by Alessia Cara and Logic featuring Khalid, and “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars. The Best New Artist category includes: Alessia Cara, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, and SZA.
Some celebrities have expressed their discontent for this year’s nominations, as actress Chloe Grace Moretz did over twitter.
“These Grammy snubs tho,” Moretz said.
British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran commented on not being nominated for Album of the Year or any of the four major categories in an interview with Billboard reporter Kevan Kenney.
“You know I’m not dying, it’s not like I’m never gonna be nominated for a Grammy ever again,” said Sheeran. “And I was nominated for two Grammys. This is why everything’s meant to be.
“The week after that, I get an MBE from the palace, I go No. 1 on Spotify, I go No. 1 on Billboard, I’m about to have my second ever Billboard No. 1, like there’s so many other things in the mix that counterbalance it.”
