Grammy Awards 2017 Predictions

The 2017 Grammy Award nominations have officially arrived, and thousands of music junkies across the nation have begun predicting the winners and expressing their desire for their favorite artists to win. The nominations are studded with familiar chart-toppers that anyone who had turned on their car radio over the year would recognize, yet a few underdogs have been given the spotlight as well. With an assortment of hip-hop, pop and even some funk/soul in the mix, here are my predictions for the 2017 Grammy Award winners.

Record of the Year: “Redbone” – Childish Gambino

Donald Glover, A.K.A. Childish Gambino, has had a field day with award winnings over the past year. He reigned victorious at the Golden Globes for Best Comedy Show and the Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor with his T.V. show Atlanta. His undeniably infectious, funkadelic hit single “Redbone” had everyone swaying in their car seats on the way home from school and work. I expect Glover’s winning streak to not be over yet.

Album of the Year: “DAMN.” – Kendrick Lamar

“DAMN.” has remained in the top charts ever since its release back in April. Its lead single, “HUMBLE.”, has over 363 million views on Youtube and was featured as the NBA’s seasonal track. Lamar’s ability to create conscious music that also rocks the charts and gets radio play is a skill commendable enough to win him a Grammy.

Song of the Year: “Despacito (Remix)” – Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber

One would be lying if they said they had not heard this track. It gets radio play 24/7, is on repeat at restaurants and venues and was the song of the summer. Its insanely massive popularity overseas got it to a record-breaking number of streams, marking it as a sure Song of the Year winner.

Best New Artist: Khalid

Khalid was only 18 years of age when he recorded his debut album “American Teen”, a smooth, poppy album with accessibility and surprisingly professional sound that has drawn in many listeners. The lead hit single from the album, “Location”, got loads of radio play, streams and has over 192 million views on Youtube. His sudden rise to stardom has given him the chance to collaborate with established artists, such as Logic and Marshmello, and his overflowing potential should grab him the Grammy for best up-and-comer.
