On Oct. 5 the two women accused of murdering Kim Jong Un’s brother were tried in court. Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong pleaded not guilty, claiming that they had been tricked into poisoning the man. The trial is one of the world’s most high-profile murder cases, and will continue until November.

“It’ll last so long partially because it has to do a lot with North Korea and one of their important family members, especially cause Kim Jong Nam is a member of Kim Jong Un’s family,” freshman Meredith Sims said.

Kim Jong Nam, the brother of Kim Jong Un, was murdered in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Two on his way to his home in Macau, a territory controlled by China. Two women were seen approaching him from behind, rubbing their hands on his face before running to wash the substance off. Nam attempted to reach the airport clinic, but collapsed before he was able to do so. An ambulance arrived to help him, but Nam died on the way to the hospital.

The women claimed that they had been participating in a prank for a reality TV show, and that they had been rubbing something similar to baby oil on Nam’s face.

“I believe the women are guilty of killing him,” said Sims, “In his death reports they

proved that what killed him was the solution that was put on his face. It was poisonous, so it would make no sense for these women to say that it was prank for a TV show.”

The substance rubbed onto Kim’s face was discovered to be a deadly poison called VX (venemous agent X), which has been banned by the United Nations. According to CNN, the poison killed him in about 20 minutes.

The two women who allegedly killed Nam were from humble backgrounds in Indonesia and Vietnam. Aisyah was seen the day before celebrating her birthday, which was broadcasted on social media. Aisyah was seen blowing out her birthday candles and enjoying a nice dinner among her friends.

The two women pleaded not guilty in court. If convicted, both will face the death penalty. “The women are arguing one point that is extremely opposed to what the doctors have found,” said Sims, “[So] it will take a long time to sort that out.”
