Is security the only thing to be blamed?
Why we should focus on other factors for why acts of terror happen
When it comes to safety in society several measures have been taken to insure everyday security. Yet many have questioned whether these measures are enough to keep us safe. Though it is true that many catastrophic mass shootings and other acts of terrorism have occurred somewhat frequently in the past few months, I believe their is really little that can be done in hyping up security to what the level it is at now.
When you look back on tragic events such as Charlottesville, where a white supremacist drove his car intentionally into a protest, and the Las Vegas shooting where an unsuspected lone gunman sniped out 58 people, it is almost impossible to predict or prevent these attacks from occurring. This is not to say that we can’t try to prevent the acts from happening, but bulking up security is not the solution. If anything we need to focus on social aspects of promoting tolerance and mental health in the this country, aspects our society lacks in addressing whether through politicians or the media.
On the other side of the spectrum it is easy to understand that impressionable minds can be swayed by the media’s usually one sided stance that security is the main issue. While they lack to state the other possible causes that we as a people could be trying to solve to help prevent hypothetical acts of terror from happening. Yet,while the media is a big portion of the problem in blaming security, another cause of why these terrible acts occur is our politicians. When politicians simply just blame one issue and stay away from the uncomfortable topics they are ignoring a huge contributing factor to why some of these acts take place at all, leaving people uninformed on all the facts.
In the end it is easy to rationalize the “what if” scenarios on how these acts violence could have been stopped, but in the end more security is not the solution. If anything we as a society should strengthen other areas of weakness we have developed to help make these disturbed individuals not consider doing these heinous acts through helping people with mental health issues get the treatment they need and have politicians help promote unifying messages to inspire peace among those who are different. When we simply focus on one aspect such as bulking up security we limit ourselves to look at other contributing factors that could also help stop terrible acts of violence.
