On Sunday Nov. 12, Marquise Goodwin lost his newborn baby boy due to some complications early in the morning. Later that day, the San Francisco 49ers receiver caught an 83-yard touchdown and led his team to their first victory of the season.

Goodwin’s wife had to deliver the baby stillborn at 19 weeks at 4 a.m. on Sunday. She had some complications in the week leading up to the delivery and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance hours before the birth. Goodwin was by her every step of the way and stayed with her in the hospital until she encouraged him to play in the game.

“[Morgan] felt God moved her for allowing me to go play, and she encouraged me, raised my spirits and helped me get ready for the game,” Goodwin said according to the Bay Area News Group.

Goodwin scored the team’s first touchdown of the game and took to his knees in the endzone after an 83-yard reception. Only a handful of his teammates and coaches knew what was happening, so few knew what it took for him to play in the game. Once the game concluded, the Santa Clara police escorted Goodwin through stadium traffic so he could return to the hospital to be with his life.

“I have so much respect for him, to come out here and still play, with the hurt that he had in his heart, and to ball out,” 49ers safety Eric-Reid told SF-Gate.com.

Goodwin honored his wife on Tuesday with a sweet Instagram post, just two days after they kissed their baby boy goodbye.

“You’re looking at strength, courage, & resiliency all in one picture,” Goodwin captioned the picture. “So many more words to describe my beautiful wife. I love you sweetheart.”

On Wednesday Nov. 17, Goodwin and his wife Morgan sat down for an interview on CBS This Morning. Morgan told CBS that it was cathartic to speak about the loss and that they hoped to be able to help others who are going through something similar.

Many people respect Goodwin for playing through his pain and helping the 49ers win their first victory of the season. He and his wife have received many gifts and messages of support since Sunday. While Goodwin and his wife are still very upset over this tragedy, the two want to help others who are going through something similar.
