May the sequels be with you
December 18, 2015— crowds of people wearing Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, and Yoda costumes left theaters nationwide in awe after experiencing resolution to a film series that ended in 1983, Star Wars. Return of the Jedi hit theaters May 25, 1983, and it left many fans of the series satisfied with a happy ending after Luke Skywalker and his cronies saved the galaxy. However, this story wasn’t over just yet.
The original trilogy was directed and written by George Lucas and produced by LucasFilm, and they consist of Episodes 4-6. The prequels were then executed similarly beginning in 1999 with The Phantom Menace. Disney then proceeded to buy LucasFilm in 2012 and announced production of a sequel series consisting of episodes 7-9, beginning with The Force Awakens in 2015.
Episode seven uncovers the story of what happens many years after the fall of the Galactic Empire, and viewers receive insight about the events regarding beloved characters of the original trilogy, such as Luke, Han, Leia, C3PO, Chewbacca, etc. The rise of another evil faction called the First Order sets out to annihilate the Jedi and find Luke Skywalker, who emerged into hiding after his own student created this rebellion. The plot serves a purpose to engage older fans who enjoyed the original trilogy by recasting those actors, and new, younger actors were introduced to gain approval from younger generations. Clearly, their method worked. The Force Awakens received 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, an acclaimed film review website, and it made more than one billion dollars in 12 days, Wikipedia reports.
However, Disney didn’t stop there. They also revealed plans for three different “Star Wars Story” movies. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters on December 10, 2016. The film takes place in the moments before the beginning to episode one, A New Hope. Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, goes on a journey to acquire the Death Star plans and deliver them to the Rebel Alliance. The ending scene of Rogue One parallels the opening scene in A New Hope, thanks to the use of computer-generated imagery. The second extra movie is set to explain the background of the infamous bootlegger, Han Solo. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, the movie will most likely hit theaters in 2018. Also cast were Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and more. The third extra movie is still a mystery.
“The Han Solo prequel follows Han, according to screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, in his business dealings about 10 years before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy. Disney CEO Bob Iger says we’ll meet Han at 18, and the film will follow him to approximately age 24,” Newsweek.com reports.
December 15, 2017— episode eight, The Last Jedi, is set to premier. Many rumors and leaks have led fans in different directions as to what might occur in the episode that resolves a cliffhanger from The Force Awakens. However, two teaser trailers have officially been released, and we can expect more advertising to occur two months before the release date, Independent.co.uk reports.
One rumor that has caught people’s attention is that The Last Jedi will have “a twist as mind blowing as The Empire Strikes Back’s ‘I am your father’ moment,” Esquire.com reports. The cliffhanger at the end of The Force Awakens certainly left us in the dark regarding the current state of the galaxy. The teaser trailers have provided some insight, but they too opened many different plot holes, such as the declaration made by Skywalker.
Mark Hamill plays Luke Skywalker in all of the movies involving Luke, and Hamill has commented on The Last Jedi sparingly. “It’s really odd going out to do press for a movie that you’re not supposed to talk about. What are we going to talk about? The weather?” Hamill claims he said to his wife about the press tour in an interview with Starwars.com.
