‘Closer’ to the top

The Chainsmokers don’t plan on slowing down, and they have big plans for 2017

On July 29, 2016, a fairly new duo released a single that would later climb to the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. Alex Pall and Drew Taggart make up the iconic DJ pair known as the Chainsmokers, and they are famous for their new and fresh EDM style (electronic dance music). They have collaborated with Halsey, Daya, and with Emily Warren most recently on their newest single, Paris.

After Closer, they dropped two singles before the year ended, and they performed Closer with Halsey at the American Music Awards. After an extremely successful 2016, the Chainsmokers had even bigger plans in store. Paris was released on January 13, 2017, and reached number seven on the charts in January.

Social media impacts the world immensely today, so what better way to get feedback than to set up a poll on Twitter? The Chainsmokers asked their fans if they finally wanted an album in 2017, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. After just releasing singles and EP’s the duo agreed to respond to the demand and start planning an album. However, for now they plan to go on tour with Kiiara and Emily Warren in cities all over North America. The dubbed their tour as ‘Memories: Do Not Open.”

The Grammy Awards are on Sunday, February 12, and the Chainsmokers have been nominated for three awards: best new artist, best dance recording, and best pop duo/group performance with Halsey. They face competition such as Rihanna and Drake, Chance the Rapper, and Twenty One Pilots. So far, they have won an American Music Award for favorite electronic/dance music artist, an NRJ Music Award for best new DJ, and are nominated for three Grammys, eight iHeartRadio Music Awards, and one Kids’ Choice Award.

For a long time, EDM has been regarded as club music. However, the Chainsmokers have delivered a fresh style to the genre. Their music is meaningful, and Taggart’s vocals along with a popular female singer with similar style provides a “goosebumps” vibe to their music.

If the Chainsmokers continue on this successful path and continually release new, creative work, they may have a shot at bigger and better opportunities in the future. As long as they can keep discovering new ways to make and produce music, their work will stay relevant.

From tours to award shows to albums, the Chainsmokers have a plethora of things to do before the end of 2017. If they stay on track, they’re likely to receive even more Grammy nominations next year, and hopefully even plan a bigger, worldwide tour.
