‘Jackie’

Jackie is rated R due to a brief recreation of John F Kennedy’s assassination, and two uses of the F-word.  If a movie uses the F-word more than one time, it is automatically rated R.  Normally, HPHS Media would not review a movie that is rated R, but because of its historical context, Jackie is a special case.

Jackie, starring Natalie Portman, is based around the assassination of John F. Kennedy.  It follows First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, as she talks to a reporter, and recounts the time in her life after President Kennedy was shot.  This includes when she gave a tour of the White House, the day of the assassination, the funeral, and more.

The way this movie is put together is very unique in that it’s from Jackie’s perspective as she tells a reporter everything that happened through multiple flashbacks.

As a movie viewer, I love when a film can make me both laugh and cry. This Drama/Film Biography is a perfect example of this.  Even with the melancholy displayed in this movie, I still found myself laughing a few times at some well-placed jokes.

Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Jackie Kennedy is absolutely amazing.  “I didn’t see anybody else playing Jackie,”  said the director of the film Pablo Larrain.  “It was a combination of elegance, sophistication, intelligence, and fragility.”

The only problem that I had with this movie was that while some parts seemed to run a bit too long, others seemed too short.  The movie’s run time is one hour and forty minutes, but I wish that they elaborated on certain topics, like their kids more.

My absolute favorite aspect of Jackie is the costumes.  When looking at a side-by-side of the costumes in the movie, and Jackie Kennedy’s outfits, they are uncanny and beautiful.

Overall I really enjoyed the movie Jackie because of the way they used emotional appeal, the beautiful costumes, and the way the film was put together.
