Dak versus Tony
Tony Romo has been the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback for the past 10 seasons, while Dak Prescott was drafted this year, in the fourth round, out of Mississippi State. Prescott earned the starting quarterback position in the preseason, after backup quarterback Kellen Moore broke his leg in training camp, and the Cowboys elected to start Prescott in the preseason, over Jameill Showers, where he had a very impressive preseason. When Dallas drafted Prescott out of Mississippi State, he was the starting quarterback and holds all of the school’s passing records. Romo has had back issues, which sidelines him for 12 games in the 2015 season, and because of a re-injury, he missed the first six games of the 2016 season. Prescott was named the starter for the 2016 season, after Romo suffered a vertebral compression fracture, in the first quarter of the Cowboys preseason game, against the Seattle Seahawks. The Cowboys decisively defeated the Green Bay Packers, on Sunday, October 16, for the first time since 2009; the Green Bay Packers had won the last five games. Prescott has led the Cowboys to a 5-1 start, and the question is: what will happen when Romo returns from his injury? With Romo anticipated to return in a couple of weeks, there is a lot of controversy as to who will be the starting quarterback. So, those in favor of Romo will argue that this has been Romo’s team for the past 10 years, and he should be the starting quarterback when he returns. Those in Prescott’s camp, will argue he has lead the team to five straight victories, he has played exceptionally well; the team has very good chemistry, and he has earned the right to continue as the starter. The real question is: what will Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones and the Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett do when Romo is healthy?
“There is nothing I would rather do than go into the last half of the season with a ready-to-go Tony Romo and a winning Dak Prescott,” Jones said. “I dream of being able to make that decision.”
It is becoming more controversial, as the Cowboys are not definitively saying what will happen when Romo returns. When you talk about, in Prescott’s favor, there is momentum; the team is rallying around him. In addition, he is 23, while Romo is 36, nearing retirement age. Romo has never taken the Cowboys to the Super Bowl; he has only won two playoff games, and he has missed the last 18 regular-season games, due to injury. Even though there is controversy, the good news for the Cowboys is: they are riding a five-game winning streak, and they have the fortune to have their choice of an incredibly talented rookie, or a proven seasoned leader.
