Barbie gets a makeover
The classic Barbie doll was released March 9, 1959, and now, in 2016, they have announced the doll will be produced in many new models.
Mattel Inc. introduced the curvy, petite and tall forms of the new addition to Barbie due to the criticism of the original, slim Barbie. In addition, the new models will be sold in different eye color, skin color and hairstyles.
What brought Mattel to be determined about this new product is that the old Barbie has lost children’s interest over the past few years. Children now prefer spending their play time with other toys rather than Barbie, which was Mattel’s most prominent brand.
Now that the prices have drastically plummeted by double digits in the recent years, they worked to find a way to adjust these falling numbers. Some industry professionals have not supported the altered physical features of the 57-year-old Barbie and believe that it will not rejuvenate what was once so infamous.
A huge reason for the decrease in Barbie’s price is the demand for modern technology. Electronics and video games have become predominant in this generation. Lego, the world’s highest toymaker, has even struggled because they’re trying to charm the new, growing market by introducing toys that can appeal to both boys and girls at young ages.
Mattel has now improved due to the attraction of the multiple skin-toned Barbies to choose from, and it made Mattel realize what the people were really looking for in a doll rather than the same, iconic one that Mattel held out with for too long. The new and augmented dolls were announced recently in Time magazine and are now available to pre-order the dolls online. Alex Clark, a Mattel spokesman, stated that the dolls will be available at major retailers such as Toys ”R” Us and Walmart in late March.
The curvy, more built doll’s goal was to relate to the cultural shift. Parents and health professionals have complained that too many dolls sold at toy stores coordinate with the extremely thin stereotype, which is very close to looking anorexic. With these new dolls, Mattel is wanting to bring confidence with their bodies to the boys and girls, and help aid this generation.
