Fe(Male) Fashion

Men’s fashion is starting to blur the gender lines by borrowing key points from women’s fashion: makeup, nail polish, dresses and skirts.

In the 21st century, male celebrities are throwing gender roles and ‘masculinity’ to the dogs. In the past couple of years, the men’s fashion industry began to branch out more and more and play with the ideas of not caring about old-fashioned societal norms. Women’s fashion has been inspired by menswear for decades, and now its time for men’s fashion to do the reverse. But can guys really pull off the new trends?

Makeup?:

Guys have been wearing makeup for years, but the beauty products were also being called other names in order to make them appear more masculine, such as ‘man-sacra’ and ‘guy liner’. Now, hiding behind a makeup’s nickname is long in the past. Clothing and makeup brand, Tom Ford, has recently released their new line of guy-only lipstick. The ‘Lips and Boys’ collection looks like any other lip product, with bold colors spanning from metallic gold, black, red and nude tones. Nail polish has also been sported by many stars including Johnny Depp, Snoop Dogg, Steven Tyler, Jared Leto, Brad Pitt, Zac Efron and Wiz Khalifa, just to name a few.

Floral Prints?:

Yes, you can’t talk about men’s fashion and not mention king fashionisto: Harry Styles. At the American Music Awards and the X-Factor, Styles busted out some bold and flowery Gucci suits. Patterned suits are one thing, but his garden-y look burst the bubble of men’s fashion norms. This is nothing new for the pop-star, as he’s been known to paint his nails, sport glittery boots and he even braided his hair for a concert once.

Skirts and Dresses?:

When you think guys and skirts, one name comes to mind immediately: Jaden Smith. The 17-year-old trendsetter has stepped out in skirts and dresses numerous time, like at his prom and the Coachella music festival. Now, the Hollywood teen is the face of the Louis Vuitton women’s collection, in a skirt, of course. Whether he’s modeling female clothing or rapping, Jaden is a trailblazer. Another rapper, Yung Thug, has worn dresses and skirts for magazine covers and photo shoots and in his normal, day-to-day life.

Plain Old Women’s Clothes?:

Alt-Pop frontman Matty Healy is known to shop in the women’s section. His affinity for bright button-downs and women’s jeans is no secret. In his “Robbers” music video, the singer sported a pink, white and purple women’s shirt, which sold out immediately because of him. He also checked another point off the list by putting on blue eye shadow and lipstick in the “Love Me” music video. Kanye West, Russell Brand and Lil B are a some more celebrities to add to the ever growing list.

With big stars leading the way, who knows where the men’s fashion industry will be in the next few years? What other celebrities will join the fashion reformation? With something as ever-changing as fashion is, we’ll just have to wait and see the future trends of 2016.
