Brad’s Apps: Mr Jump

Mr. Jump is an indie platform game for iOS which has received the runner up award for Apple’s best app of 2015. The app was created by French indie game studio 1Button and was released in March of this year. The app achieved five million downloads in only four days after being released, further crediting the great execution of this game.

Mr. Jump has 24 levels within two worlds, which require you to beat each level to level up. If you get stuck on a level, for 99 cents a key can be purchased allowing you to proceed in the game. To enter World B, you have to reach level 3 of World A.

The first thing you will notice when you start the first level is the beautiful design of the app and the detail which went into designing it. From the design of Mr. Jump himself, to the minimalist background and obsticales to the losing screen. Each level share the features of being based on islands with a goal to avoid sharp objects and successfully make jumps to the next island. Some gaps between islands have power squares which if you land on will give you an additional boost allowing you to make a long gap.

Mr. Jump does a great job of appealing to a wide variety of age groups and cultures through its simple gameplay. The game is already familiar to most and easy to figure out due to its similarity with games like Flappy Bird. Another similarity with Flappy bird is Mr. Jump’s rapid rise in popularity and becoming a mainstream game in a matter of weeks. Luckily, the success of the app was handled better, in part due to 1Button’s maturity in the game development space, and the app has not vanished from the App Store.

As is usual with mobile games in 2015 Mr. Jump has sharing features which include: sending a picture of a recent achievement/gameplay to Twitter or Facebook along with achievements and awards in Game Center. There are also intermittent ads between level restarts and there is an available $1.99 in app purchase to remove the ads and support the developer.

Overall, if you are looking for a fun game to burn hours during a long plane ride or to entertain family members during the holidays Mr. Jump is a great game, and you can download it today on the Apple App Store and it is free for both iOS devices and on the new Apple TV.
