A great new alternative to antiquated driver’s ed websites

Aceable is a new driver’s ed app and website for parent taught driver’s education in Texas. The app is the first driver’s ed program you can complete solely on your phone. This allows you to never have to use a computer to which is great in today’s age where we have small bursts of time to do things.

Aceable structures itself in levels and each level has chapters on specific topics. In each chapter you are presented slides with information about a certain topic, sometimes pictures which have share button for whatever reason, and videos. The videos are never longer than a few minutes and once you watch it fully you will usually be given a question about it with an obvious answer. There are also intermittent quizzes spread throughout which are about the page before it and if you miss a question that’s okay! When you complete a chapter you are given a screen which gives you the opportunity to take a break or continue to the next chapter. Once the level is completed you take a level test which is just reused questions from the quizzes within the chapter so you already know the answer which is laughable given that these are actual pass or fail tests the state looks at.

Once you complete level one, you are eligible to receive a permit. To get the permit, click the permit status button on the home screen and you will receive an email in about two business days containing the certificate you need to give to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). When the level is completed a practice test for your permit will become available so you know what to expect and be ready to pass the permit exam.

When you get to the DPS, be prepared to wait a while then you give your certificate along with social security card (NO XEROX COPIES), birth certificate along with other identification papers to the DPS employee. You will then take a multiple choice test then when you pass you have your permit!

After you receive your permit you are ready to continue on with the Aceable lessons. You will then complete the next few levels and you will start driving to test the skills you have learned. There is a driving manager section in the app that gives you a checklist of the skills from each level and chapter. There are check boxes beside these skills so know that you have successfully done everything in the lessons.

It is a requirement to drive a minimum of 32 hours to be eligible for you license and you have to have a record of when and how long you drove up to 32 hours. Unfortunately, Aceable does not have a feature within the app to record this information so you will have to record it on paper or in another app.

Once you have completed all the levels, you will then receive a certificate of completion for the course and you are then able to return to the DPS and get your license!

Overall, Aceable is a great alternative to the antiquated driver’s ed websites on the internet and a great cheap alternative to classroom driver’s ed. The app itself is free but requires a $100 in app purchase to be able to take the course ,and it’s available on the App Store, Google Play and online at aceable.com
