Opening Bell Coffee
Opening Bell Coffee is located in Downtown by South Side Ballroom. Since some roads nearby this shop are under construction, I had a difficult time getting to it, but the way back home was simpler. There is a parking lot about a block down the street from Opening Bell that is free. To get to the shop, you have to walk down a flight of stairs and take a right. Since it was a Sunday afternoon, it was not crowded.
I ordered a caramel latte, and was not disappointed. It was warm and not too sweet. Although the caramel flavor was not prevalent, there was just enough to enhance the overall coffee. The milk design on it was not the best, but at least taste trumps look. Opening Bell sells not only coffee, but some bakery style food. I also ordered a turkey sandwich on a croissant, and it was delicious.
The ambience of the shop was unlike any part of Dallas that I’ve been to. The decor was retro and included neon signs, a piano covered with various vintage photographs, and other vintage items. There is also a stage in the back corner designated to open mic nights on Tuesday nights at 6:30.
The baristas were friendly but not in a way where they will go out of their way to make conversation with you. They were patient while I ordered since I was a little conflicted on what to purchase, but otherwise, nothing about them stood out.
Studying at Opening Bell might be a little tricky since there are many distractions due to the decor, but not necessarily because of noise. It is a far drive to study on a school night, so I personally would not spend study time there.
I recommend Opening Bell Coffee if you are looking to take a break from hipster coffee shops and want to go more retro while still getting great coffee.
