Building up Dallas

Habitat for Humanity works with the national Habitat organization to build homes for the poor. The club has a few builds a year and a group of 15 people go the Habitat center for a few hours on a Saturday and help build a house. Once a month the officers have a meeting to plan the upcoming events and think of ways they can effectively raise money for the organization.

“This summer, 14 other people and I went to two different Habitat for Humanity builds. At the first build we put together the outside frame of the house. At the second build we painted a house that was already put up by the organization in the neighborhood. We are planning our spring builds and will have a sign up sheet for anyone that wants to help with the build and get service hours,” junior Allie Romo said.

Habitats main priority is to help raise money to fund the building of more houses and in years past they have had various fundraisers to help the organization. Last year they had a themed dance for the kids and have begun planning the upcoming fundraisers.

“This year we are planning on doing another themed dance for the kids but also do a fundraiser dinner for the parents. We are going to get more people to come and have events for both the parent and the kids,” junior Anna Clark said.

The officers know getting the word out will be important for the fundraisers to be successful and benefit the club in a positive way.

“I’m publicity and I’m the one that has to advertise the dance at the school and sent out evites to the parents to get people in the know of the dates and place and when they can buy tickets,” sophomore Emily Oden said.

Habitat for Humanity is helping make Dallas a better place every year, and hopefully this year with the new fundraising ideas and participating in more build, they earn enough money and help the organization fund many new habitat houses throughout the city.
