Out and About in Dallas: North Bark Dog Park
North Bark Dog Park is located near the cross between the Dallas North Toll Road and the George Bush Turnpike behind the Gramercy Apartments. The park is run by the City of Dallas and is closed on Tuesdays, rainy days, and periodically during the colder months (which we are approaching).
When you first arrive, there are no issues finding parking, as there is a large lot across from the park. When you walk up to the entrance you see three separate areas: a play area for small dogs, a large play area for large dogs, and a man-made pond for both small and large dogs. The second I let my dog off the leash he just went running! The large dog area has lots of spaces, including some in a shaded area. A great thing about this park is that it’s maintained by the City of Dallas so the fencing is secure and there is no risk of your dog escaping (except by human error at the gate of course), and the park is well taken care of.
While my dog was socializing and engaging with other dogs, I explored the rest of the park. I found a nice walking trail that meandered through the shaded area and had a nice array of benches to sit and relax to enjoy the fall Texas day. Eventually, my dog got bored and I went into the dog area and threw him a tennis ball which rebooted his excitement.
Once he became tired and slow, I took him to the the nice benches by the lake. I let him off the leash and he immediately dumped his head in the water. I thought it’d be fun to let him go swimming so I threw our tennis ball in the lake. He instinctively went after it, running towards the lake. Oddly, after only a few steps in, he decided to turn back; I later came to the conclusion that the lake was somewhat chilly.
Unfortunately after his affair with the lake, he was wet with nasty lake water, but the city’s park designers had us covered with a dog shower. The shower was having a few issues turning on but a stream of water eventually flowed and I was able to wash him off.
Overall we really enjoyed our time at North Bark Dog Park. It was well maintained, clean and had a great atmosphere any dog and master would love.
