HP Scots vs. Richardson Berkner Rams Football Game
The Scots hosted the Richardson Berkner Rams at Highlander Stadium on Thursday. The game was originally to be played on Friday, but it was moved to Thursday in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the monsoon game the week before. It was senior night for the Scots and for the seniors it was their second to last game that they would ever play at home.
Senior, running back Stephen Dieb got the game off to a fast start as he returned the opening kickoff 80 yards from the Scots’ goal line down into Berkner’s red zone. Four plays later, Dieb ran for a seven yard touchdown and gave the Scots an early lead, 7-0. The Rams answered the Scots’ long return with one of their own, but it was called back to their own 18 yard line due to a penalty. They made it down to the Scots’ 20-yard line before they were finally forced to kick a 40-yard field goal to make the score 7-3. Senior, Joseph Sweeney, not to be outdone by Dieb, returned the resulting kickoff down to the Rams’ 15 yard line from where senior, kicker Will Moore kicked a 35 yard field goal to make the score 10-3 with 3:12 left in the first quarter. The Rams, after starting on their own 20 yard line, drove down the field and scored a touchdown off a running play, which they continued to use all night, to tie the game at 10-10 with 11:57 left in the second quarter.
Neither team scored any more points in the first half and at halftime it was still tied at 10-10. Capitalizing on a turnover on downs by Berkner to start the second half, senior, quarterback, Henry Allen lead the Scots from their own 8 yard all the way to the end zone as he scrambled for a Scots touchdown. 17-10, Scots. The Rams weren’t ready to quit however. They scored on a 32-yard bootleg play and tied the game at 17-17 late in the third quarter. Berkner, perhaps getting a little ahead of themselves, decided to attempt an onside kick after tying the game. They did not recover the kick however and Allen once again made them pay for their risky play calling as he ran for another touchdown to cap a 35 yard, two minute and sixteen second drive. The Scots were now up 24-17 as the fourth quarter began.
The Scots’ defense forced Berkner to punt on their first possession of the fourth quarter, setting the offense up on their own one yard line. The Scots then drove 99 yards in four minutes and four seconds. Dieb capped the series with his second running touchdown of the night, giving the Scots their biggest lead of the game with 6:30 left to play. Highland Park’s defense retained their momentum through the 4th quarter. Junior, lineback Matt Gahm blizted Berkner’s quarterback as he screamed across the line of scrimmage, delivering a crushing sack and forcing a fumble that was recovered by Luke Blanton, also a junior. Blanton’s fumble recovery ended any hopes of a Berkner comeback and gave the Scots the ball with 3:11 left to play in the game. Junior, quarterback Michael Clarke took a knee on Berkner’s 32 yard line and the clock expired, ending the second to last home game that the seniors would ever play. 31-17, Scots.
