Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” is a revolutionary album leaving fans satisfied with her latest body of work.
The new project immediately surpassed music records by being the most streamed album in a day, causing Swift to become the most streamed artist in Spotify history. There were 13 songs on the album initially, but just when Swifties thought that was it, at 3 a.m., she dropped seven more songs which were a part of the “Midnight’s (3 a.m. Edition).” The songs are “The Great War,” “Bigger Than The Whole Sky,” “Paris,” “High Infidelity,” “Glitch,” “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” and “Dear Reader.”
The songs in “Midnights” gave multiple genres through songs that are sad, calm and catchy to dark and vengeful, detailing 13 sleepless nights Swift has had in her life.
The songs that speak the loudest on the album are “The Great War” and “Midnight Rain.” The two songs are both hard, deep songs with metaphors of her past boyfriends. It is really hard to say what “The Great War” is about, but “Midnight Rain” is suspected to be about her ex British actor Tom Hiddleston, who dated Swift for around two months.
The first track on the project is “Lavender Haze,” referencing a common phrase used in the 50s to describe deep love. It is a love story in which the man she was with at the time did not care about what people thought of her, making her, “feel the Lavender Haze creep up.”
The second track on the album is “Maroon,” where Swift uses colors to show her real emotions. On the track, Swift sings about how she gave herself to a man, suspected to be American actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and shows the pain she feels. The song starts with how they were friends then going forth into a deep relationship, however soon enough, the relationship ends.
The third and most popular song on the album is “Anti-Hero.” This song is talking about Swift’s deep dark fears about herself, using the help of her music video for the song to relate to people with body dysmorphia, trauma and anxiety. In another side of the song and video, it shows that this is just who Swift is and she doesn’t care if people like or dislike her.
Leading into a different type of genre of music, “Snow on the Beach” featuring Lana Del Rey is the fourth track on the album. However, there is practically no evidence of Del Rey on the track, which is fine, but if you’re going to feature someone, make sure their part is significantly more noticeable. Overall, it is a very mellow and down to earth song that’s very soothing and dreamy.
The fifth track on this album is “You’re on Your Own, Kid.” It talks about how someone sometimes has to face life head on. It shows that she has been through some uneasy things in life, which I think anyone could relate to.
The song “Midnight Rain,” like said before, is a very heartfelt song and even though it is not sad in any way, you can just tell what Swift wanted versus what she needed.
The song “Question…?” is about Swift’s insecurities with herself, not being loved by her own boyfriend, speculated to be English singer-songwriter Harry Styles. By asking if he is thinking about his ex-girlfriend instead of her, it is a very relatable song to anyone who is in a relationship because it is natural to think about those questions every once in a while.
The next song has profanity in it, “Vigilante S**t” is about her vengeful self coming out when someone has disappointed her. Just like the strong woman she is, she will clap back at a moment’s notice and put her own feelings before others. It is a reminder of Swift’s 2017 album, “Reputation,” which has similar dark undertones.
The song after is “Bejeweled,” which contains a very happy beat that can make anyone dance.
The next few songs are very skippable. The tracks “Labyrinth,” “Karma” and “Sweet Nothings” are not actively bad, but are just something I couldn’t get attached to.
The final song on “Midnights” is one of the best songs Swift has ever written and is an absolute masterpiece. “Mastermind” has a great rhythm and is catchy and I love how the song grows as you keep listening before backing away.
I loved all of the songs on the album except one. “Glitch” is not my thing because I dislike the use of actual static in the background track. It honestly is a mediocre song and one that I could absolutely live without.
Overall, this album will make an impact on many people’s lives. Even if you are not a fan of Swift, “Midnights” is definitely worth giving a try.
