Brad’s Apps: Shooty Skies

When you first see Shooty Skies, an endless arcade game by Mighty Games, you might think of Crossy Road. The Mighty Games team is very similar to the Crossy Road team from Hipster Whale, the studio which designed Crossy Road, which explains the similarities between the games.

In Shooty Skies you start as a squirrel in an airplane killing bats, smartphones, analog TVs, and other obstacles/enemies. The plane auto fires many small rounds similar in fashion to Galaga, the 1980’s arcade game, in a straight line towards the enemy. When you let go of the plane, it stops moving and forms a “super shot” which has more power than a normal shot and can kill larger enemies. When your score passes 50 in a single round, you are given the option to continue on with a payment of coins or watching an ad. This can be nice if you’re really close to a high number like 100 but otherwise not worth watching a 30 second advertisement.

Similar to Crossy Road fashion, there are other characters available. These characters are available through gift boxes scattered throughout the game r payments of 99 cents per character. When you switch characters, the background and the setting of the game changes. When you switch to Crossy Chicken for example, you are flying over rows of cars and rivers, which was the design of Crossy Road. In addition, when you switch characters, your vehicle changes too; for example Crossy Chicken rides an eagle and “C-1000” flies a spaceship box.

Overall, Shooty Skies is a great and simple game to play in your spare time, whether you have 5 minutes to spare or an hour. This is a great take on an never-ending arcade game is a fashion that is unique to other arcade games, yet incorporates elements that gamers may recognize from other well-known games.
