The Met Gala is a huge event that the biggest celebrities attend and dress for a certain theme. People gather around to look at all of the different and elegant Met Gala looks, but no one really knows what the history of the Met Gala is.

The Met Gala is the fashion world’s equivalent to the Oscars. The Gala happens the first of every May each year. The invited celebrities come together at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to fundraise money celebrating the Costume Institute’s new exhibition on a changing theme. Celebrities such as Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and more attended this year. The Met Gala started in 1946 and has become the party of the year in the celebrity world. People from the music, film, theatre and fashion industries attend as well as other celebrities, although the list changes each year.

The themes from past years have included punk, Fashion in a World of Technology, Through the Looking Glass, and this year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Image. The individual tickets cost $30,000 for those outside the official guest list, the prices were raised $10,000 to increase the exclusivity of the event. The guest list each year ranges from around 650-700 people. Celebrities who are not on the guest list may also attend if they are endorsed by a fashion brand, such as: Dior, Versace, Balmain and others in past years. The event starts with a cocktail hour and a formal dinner.

The guests arrive for the cocktail hour and walk the red carpet to show off their outfits. The hosts for this year’s event were Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Rihanna and Amal Clooney, along with co-chairs: Christine and Stephen Schwarzman. The Met Gala also includes the viewings of 25 different galleries which take up over 60,000 square feet. Before the dinner party there are different performers, these artists are usually very high up in the music industry. This year’s performances included the Sistine Chapel Choir and Madonna. Outfits that gained notice this year included Katy Perry’s extravagant wings and golden dress, Blake Lively’s handmade Lorraine Schwartz crown and Rihanna’s diamond headpiece.
