You will Love Simon too

A movie review of Love Simon

You+will+Love+Simon+too

When I decided to go to the theater to see Love Simon, I didn’t know what to expect. I had heard some of the general background and heard my friends rave about it, but for the most part I went into this film blind. By the end of the film I was eager to see it again.

With the basic premise of the film you might right off the bat assume it will just be any cliche movie, but I feel the movie truly holds a lot of cute and dynamic elements. The story follows the simple tale of 17 year old Simon Spier, played by Nick Robinson, a normal high school student with a cookie cutter family and social life. However, he struggles with the weight of knowing he can’t truly be himself and let the world know that he is gay.

This persists until he finds a fellow anonymous classmate online that he can relate to and be candid with about how he really feels. After this the movie follows Simon trying to find himself while at the same time trying to find the identity of his anonymous pen pal.

This movie hit all the bases for me in that not only did it have its good moments of humor, it also had emotionally trying moments and touched on a topic in society that is still an issue for some today. I found it refreshing for this teen movie to go off brand and actually touch on societal stigma that some hateful people still spew to make those who are gay feel as though they can’t be be who they want to be.

As for aspects I found annoying or subpar in the film I found few that bugged me. If I had to mention one thing I would have to say that the movie at times could sink back into the typical high school teen movie template that many other movies follow. Yet, other than that, it is hard to criticize this movie due to the fact it just holds so many wonderful aspects in it.

I believe that this movie would be good for anyone to go see right now in theaters. Not only does it hold an important message for everyone, I also think it is a good film on its own merit as well.
