HPHS Band Winter Concert

HPHS+Band+Winter+Concert

Our school band’s annual winter concert is a performance of several winter themed musical pieces. This event on Monday Dec. 11 take place in the Palmer Auditorium and goes from seven in the afternoon and goes until nine at night. The concert is followed by a reception in the cafeteria, which includes the whole band and features a piece where the whole band program plays together. While the string orchestra is not involved in this concert they do have their own winter concert.

Although this concert is very close to the time of Christmas, the concert is not made up solely of Christmas music. Reece Dorn, a member of the band said that the wind symphony is playing Holiday Portraits by Sean O’Loughlin. Although the band will not only be playing Christmas music, there are some Christmas songs on the list. Daniel Wilkes, a freshman in the section of the band, said that one of the Christmas songs that will be played is Chestnuts On An Open Fire. This song is also known as The Christmas Song by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé which was written in 1945. According to Tormé The Christmas Song was actually written in the summer of 1945, not in the winter.

Even though the members of our championship winning band have academic chores to attend to, they have still prepared for this event. Dorn said that the band has spent hours working on music and practising their performance for the winter concert. Although the Jazz band was originally scheduled to perform in its own concert on Nov. 28, this performance was cancelled, and instead the Jazz Band will be playing at the regular band’s winter concert.

One of the Christmas songs that will be played at the winter concert is the band’s ensemble piece. Dorn said that this song is titled Christmas Sing-Along, which was arranged by James D. Ployhar. Christmas Sing-Along is a combination of multiple well known pieces of Christmas music.

“[The concert is] going to be lots of fun, I hope everyone goes,” Wilkes said.
