January 7, 2008— Les Miles led the ‘07 Tigers to win a national championship at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. In the years to come, LSU sought another trophy at the start of 2012 against Alabama, and got run over by the Crimson Tide. Since losing to Alabama in 2011’s BCS championship game, the Tigers have not returned to the Superdome for the championship. Last year, they finished their 9-3 season ranked number 16 with a win against Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl. This season, they started ranked number 5, but this quickly changed when the Tigers lost to Wisconsin 14-16 at the season opener. Fast forward to September 24th, when they were defeated by Auburn with a 13-18 score. With their then 2-2 record, LSU chose to fire Les Miles the next day, and announced the decision along with the firing of Cam Cameron, the offensive coordinator.

Currently, Ed Orgeron operates as the interim head coach, and led the Tigers to two big victories against Missouri and Southern Mississippi. The scores were 42-7 and 45-10. Their next game is scheduled on Oct. 22nd, against Ole Miss. With these newfound changes, one wonders if the streak will hold up under Orgeron’s command. Another aspect to consider is the BCS championship. The new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger must have been a wise choice, because the Tigers have had no trouble putting points on the board. However, one of LSU’s bigger problems is maintaining a lead. This was evident in the Wisconsin game, when LSU led 14-13, but in the last few minutes, Wisconsin kicked a field goal for the win. LSU’s last two games prove that the problem has been resolved, but we will truly find out when the Tigers face a strong SEC opponent like Ole Miss.

For now, the Tigers appear to be in the clear. Firing Les Miles has proven to be a valid change.
