New Jersey and New York Bombings

 

After last Saturday’s bombings in New York and New Jersey, Ahmad Khan Rahami, the suspect in the investigation, was arrested after a shootout with the police. Rahami is a 28 year old male, who became a naturalized citizen in 2011.

On Tuesday Rahami was charged with destruction of public property, bombing a public place, use of a destructive device and use of weapons of mass destruction. This came after Rahami had been connected with the explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood, Manhattan. Rahami was also charged by the New Jersey state court resulting from the shootout with police in Linden.

As the investigation has proceeded, more information has been revealed. The bombing in Chelsea come from an explosive charge inside a pressure cooker bomb left in a dumpster. The bomb was packed with shrap metal, presumably to make the explosive charge more lethal. The explosion was estimated to travel hundreds of feet from the initial site.

A pressure cooker bomb was found unexploded nearby the other bomb site. The bomb contained similar components, along with a phone attached as a timer to the device. On the bomb twelve fingerprints were recovered by authorities. Rahami was identified through a fingerprint, where the phone was later traced to Rahami’s user address, resulting in arrest on Sunday.

Upon the arrest, when officers had responded, Rahami’s pulled out a handgun and began to fire upon police. Rahami had shot an officer in his vest, this followed in a chase where the suspect would shoot a police car, grazing an officer across the face. The police eventually had shot Rahami several times, before we was taken to the hospital for surgery. On Monday Rahami was charged with five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Rahami’s father spoke to with the FBI after a domestic dispute involving Rahami in 2014. The interviewed ensued due to reports of Rahami’s father calling his son a terrorist. Rahami’s father would later take back his statements on his son, stating that his main concern was that his son was involved in gang activity. Following Rahami’s wife, Asia Bibi Rahami, whom of which is currently in the United Arab Emirates, cooperating with U.S. officials. Rahami’s wife left the United States before the bombing on Saturday and is currently not considered to have a connection within the investigation.

Following Rahami’s arrest, authorities have obtained a journal citing several references jihadi figures and related issues. The journal was soaked in blood due to it being damaged during Rahami’s shoot out with police. The Journal ends with a message stating “Death to your OPPRESSION”.
