The JV Tennis season starts with strong determination and hard work.

The JV tennis team has begun preparing in early morning practices for the spring match season. Both new players and returning players have to do their part in order to win this spring.

Tryouts for tennis were at the end of the summer, and the teams were decided then. The varsity season is in the fall ending in November. The JV team practiced all of fall and substituted for some of the varsity players in their matches. But once varsity season ended, JV started to get more serious with their games.

This year is freshman Parker Hawk’s first year on the JV team. She is ranked as a champ. In high school, you are categorized as a zat, champ or super-champ. Beginners start at zat, moving to champ, which allows them to advance through participation in tournaments. Then there is super-champ, which is the highest ranking.

“I joined JV tennis to become part of the HP tennis legacy,” Hawk said. “What I am most excited for this season are the tournaments. But we have to prepare first in order to get there.  I make all of the morning practices, which are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I also play as much as I can with my team members. We are all preparing for this coming season, and it has been great getting to be part of a team with all of these great people. But I think that this season, we will dominate as always!”

As a team captain, junior Grant Bailey has been working with the rest of the team to prepare everyone for the upcoming season.

“The hardest part of being team captain is to constantly set a good example for the rest of your teammates to follow,” Bailey said. “I help our coach, Coach [Tylir] Jimenez, and I motivate my fellow team members to do their best at practice. Some of the goals for the semester are to perform well in all of the tournaments and prepare all of the players for tryouts for next year to make them even better. We always have to work our hardest during the whole duration of practice to become better prepared for matchplay. With all of this work with the team, I think we will win our upcoming tournaments.”

Working hard is how JV tennis will perform well in this current season. Between preparing for tournaments in practice and working with the team, JV tennis is well on its way to success this spring.
