Lacrosse Recruiting With the NCAA
Colleges have begun recruiting freshmen in high school. Some people say that
this is too early, and others think it is good to be recruited early. This is why the NCAA
has recently been proposed a rule to make recruiting illegal until the student athlete’s
junior year of high school. Players have had big reactions to the proposal of this rule to
the NCAA.
“I think that moving the recruiting time back to junior year is a good thing
because it gives the players more time to develop. It would also give the players more
time to improve their game,” freshman lacrosse player Wilson Sands said.
There have already been 60 or more recruits in the country for the freshman class.
This recruiting early thing can be bad for the student athletes because a school might
seem amazing right then, but in three years when the boys are seniors, they may dislike
the college they picked and now they will have to spend four years at a college they do
not like. How do all of these boys know exactly what they want to do in four years? It can
be a hard decision for some people to make and for others very easy. Most people who
are trying to get recruited have one dream school, and if they do not get an offer from that
school then it can sometimes be hard to make the decision to go to another school other
than the dream school. But if they do get an offer from that dream school, then they may
be tempted to take it right away, and it would then be very easy.
About 50% of lacrosse recruits decommit from the school they were committed to
or the school decommits from the lacrosse recruit. This shows how coaches should not be
recruiting freshmen or sophomores because at least half of them are not ready to decide
where they want to go to college.
Many players get nervous when coaches are on the sideline watching their game.
The student-athletes should not have to worry what the coaches see of them as freshmen,
they should be able to have fun and play the game of lacrosse.
